The highstakes tournament specialists were back to Short Deck poker, a €50k buy-in attracting 57 entries, 33 of them unique, the third of the 36-card variant events at the Casino Gran Via in the heart of the Spanish city.
The players were looking to emulate Rui Cao and Chris Brewer, winners of the first two Short Deck events in the series, those two among several who bowed out on day two in the run-up to the money bubble.
The unfortunate bubble-boy this time was Sam Greenwood, the Canadian losing most of his chips when he ran into Elton Tsang’s pocket kings, busting shortly afterwards.
Phil Ivey had already cashed twice this series, though failing to get close to a win, and that story was repeated as he ran headfirst into quads to end his title hopes...

Wai Kin Yong’s departure was both funny and painful, the son of Triton co-founder Richard Yong forgetting the rules...

Just as Rob Yong did earlier in the series, his namesake forgot that aces count as fives in Triton Short Deck, his celebrations cut short and he was out in 5th place for €233,700.
When Elton Tsang and Winfred Yu both fell to Lim making straights, the young Malaysian was heads-up against Bjorn Li, the Hong Kong-born, Chicago-resident a relatively new face at the live nosebleeds.
Both deep-stacked, a long fight was expected but didn’t materialise, the pair quickly clashing

Li decided to shove his two pair and a relieved Lim saw the river brick...

...giving him the title and a monster €855,000 payday.
Final results:
1 | Webster Lim | €855,000 |
2 | Bjorn Li | €618,500 |
3 | Winfred Yu | €399,000 |
4 | Elton Tsang | €302,000 |
5 | Wai Kin Yong | €233,700 |
6 | Phil Ivey | €182,400 |
7 | Ryan Yum | €145,400 |
8 | Rene Van Krevelen | €114,000 |
A jubilant and rather shocked Lim revealed afterwards: “Every time I sit at the table with them [Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, etc.] it still feels surreal. Back in the day I watched them on YouTube, and now I’m sitting with them. It’s a dream come true, I guess.”
Next up for the Triton highroller faithful is the €100k buy-in Main Event, day 1 attracting a massive 72 entries and day two registration still available. We’ll bring you all the best of the action, so stay tuned!
