Each year, numerous poker platforms look for new ways to promote both their platforms and the game of poker. From poker sites making changes to their ambassadors to introducing new faces to promote the game, it’s something that allows platforms to adjust and adapt.
The World Poker Tour has followed suit and recently announced changes to their Player of the Year scoring system. Here’s what it entails.
No WPT Event Left Behind
One change involves which events are able to count towards a player’s Player of the Year campaign. WPT announced that every event that is branded a WPT poker tournament will count towards a player’s campaign, excluding invitational and qualifier events. This change now includes the very popular WPTDeepStacks events, which are currently scheduled in places across the world like Amsterdam, Sydney and California. The new system is currently in effect, as the WPT 2022 season kicked off with the Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open this month.
World Poker Tour CEO Adam Pliska welcomes the new changes to the scoring system.
“From Florida to Amsterdam, and Australia to Las Vegas, every time a player sits down to play a World Poker Tour branded event, they’re going to be competing to become Player of the Year,” Polska said. “This is yet another pillar in the 20th anniversary celebration for the WPT and the players.”
WPT Season XX Scoring
The new Player of the Year scoring system introduces new scoring brackets for tournaments based on the prize pool of the tournament. As opposed to the 2021 WPT season which had only five different brackets, WPT Season XX POY scoring has introduced ten different brackets based on prize pools. The first bracket for scoring includes all tournaments with a prize pool of $500,000 or less. The next bracket is for prize pools from $500,000 to $1,000,000. This continues for prize pools all the way up to $10,000,000, with players earning more points for bigger prize pool tournaments.
A new tiebreaker system has also been put in place.
- 1st tiebreaker - Most Titles
- 2nd tiebreaker - Most Final Tables
- 3rd tiebreaker - Most In The Points
- 4th tiebreaker - Most $ Won
A $30,000 WPT Passport prize pool is up for grabs for the top three finishers in the race. First place receives a $15,000 WPT passport, while second and third receive a $10,000 and $5,000 passport, respectively.
