Halloween at the World Series of Poker is an unexpected phrase in itself given the usual summer date on the calendar, but there was something even more unexpected this year as the Godfather of poker made a surprise appearance...

Doyle Brunson hasn’t been seen at the WSOP since 2018 when he bagged a final table and 6th place finish in the $10k NL 2-7 Single Draw championship. Even that was the result of his son, Todd, talking him into playing.
However, the 88-year-old, 10-time gold bracelet winner turned up to take a shot at event 58, the $1k buy-in Super Seniors NLHE.
He had hinted that he would rock up to the Rio at some point, this tweet back in June getting fans excited at the prospect of the oldest and longest-serving living Hall of Famer going for bracelet number ten.

There was to be no dream return for Brunson, however, mucking his very first hand to an opponent who showed kings and an hour later getting the last of his chips in against an even bigger hand...

The return of the Godfather of Poker may have been short, but there is a decent chance we’ll be seeing him again before this year’s Series comes to an end – a tilt at a third Main Event gold what the poker fans would love to see.
