ShareDaniel Negreanu has revealed his warm-up plans for the 2023 World Series of Poker and it includes weightlifting, meditation and copious amounts of Rocky movies!
The WSOP – due to kick off in just 6 weeks – is the best time of year for fans of Kid Poker, who get treated to a summer of daily vlogs as the 48-year-old from Canada attempts to add to his haul of six gold bracelets.
The Rocky Balboa Routine
Before he gets there, though, health is high on the agenda for Daniel as he prepares for 7 weeks of poker, with daily weightlifting, plenty of walking, a healthy vegan diet, and mindfulness all part of the routine.Watching poker is also part of his prep, but as a huge Rocky fan it looks like the entire back catalogue of boxing movies that shot Sylvester Stallone to fame and fortune are also on the pre-WSOP curriculum.
Throw in the cult poker classic, Rounders, and it seems that Daniel is set for success, but everything changes when the WSOP actually kicks off...
WSOP recipe for Success: Sleep, pizza, and popcorn
“Sleep is priority #1, 2, and 3. Working out in morning often led to fatigue late nights when I need to be on,” he revealed, adding: “Lots of studies show when you don’t get enough sleep body wants more sugar and crap- and more often.”“So I give it whatever it wants, whenever it wants, but still start the day with a healthy breakfast and lunch then go from there. High stress after so many long days and little sleep so if I want pizza and popcorn… I eat pizza, popcorn and chocolate.”
Light exercise during the long days is also on the agenda, if his body feels up to it: “This year going to create an easy 15 minute workout to get the blood flowing and do real workouts any time I feel rested and if not, no workout.”
He’ll not only be looking to bag bracelet number seven, but also match, or even improve on his fine performance in last year’s WSOP, which saw him post a $1.6million+ profit...
Although he has his haters and detractors, there’s no denying that Daniel’s willingness to share the inside scoop and private side to his poker success is a real boon for fans of the game.
