Webster Lim has scooped the opening event of the Triton Poker SHR Series Vietnam, picking up $965,000 for seeing off a record-breaking Triton field in the $25k event #1...
The Hoiana Resort & Golf just down the coast from Da Nang is playing host to the latest in Triton Poker’s super-high roller adventures, kicking off with the two-day, $25k buy-in GGPoker SuperMillions.
The 166 entries was a record for the Triton series, 35 more than the previous highest turnout, and was a combination of “businessmen, poker pros, and hopeful qualifiers”. Among them, the likes of Paul Phua, John Juanda, and Punnat Punsri, all failed to make it through day one.
Well-known highstakes crushers Erik Seidel, Mike Watson, and Patrik Antonius all made it to the paid spots on day two, alongside many lesser-known (to a Western poker audience, at least) Thai, Malay and Asian players.
When the final table was set, a KO on each table leaving them 8-handed, it was Lim out in front, with Chris Brewer in hot pursuit, and nobody in desperate trouble, although Jonathan Jaffe and Michael Soyza had dropped to sub-20BB stacks.
In fact, both men would get it in with decent hands but still bust in 8th and 7th respectively, Jaffe running his pocket jacks into Seth Davies kings, and Soyza’s A♦J♦ losing out to Petrangelo’s A♥ Q♥.
Sosia Jiang, the only woman at the table, bust in 6th for $222k, followed by Petrangelo and then Davies, leaving Brewer, Lim and Czech online pro, Roman Hrabec, to fight out the podium spots.
Brewer’s tournament all but ended when he decided the time was ripe for a river all-in bluff...
Brewer: 5♥ 2♥
Lim: A♣ 8â™
Board: A♥ 3♠9♣ J♣ A♦
The one BB he left behind disappeared to Hrabec’s aces soon after and Brewer was out in 3rd spot for $435,500.
The heads-up battle featured a similar denouement, Lim sniffing out yet another bluff to crush Hrabec’s stack, despite the Czech pro’s triple barrel attempt...
Hrabec: 7♣ 4♣
Lim: J♥ 3â™
Board: 9♥ 2♥ 3♥ 6♠9♣
When he won the next hand, it was all over, Lim becoming the first ever winner of a Triton Vietnam event.
Final results:
1 | Webster Lim | $965,000 |
2 | Roman Hrabec | $653,600 |
3 | Chris Brewer | $435,500 |
4 | Seth Davies | $357,000 |
5 | Nick Petrangelo | $286,300 |
6 | Sosia Jiang | $222,000 |
7 | Michael Soyza | $164,000 |
8 | Jonathan Jaffe | $121,000 |
The Malaysian pro was a popular winner, not least because of his ties to Ivan Leow, who tragically died last year in Cyprus.
Lim explained after his victory: “All my close friends know mine and his relationship. Without him, I wouldn’t be here. So I just want to say that this win is for him. This is for you Ivan. I miss you.”
