Short Deck poker is truly the home for old-school legends it seems as Tony G joined Phil Ivey in the winner’s circle this week with victory in the second $25k buy-in Short Deck event of the Super High Roller Bowl Europe.
Ivey had bagged the opening event of the 9-tournament series being held at Merit Royal Hotel & Casino in Kyrenia, Cyprus and today Tony G took down the third event – the second of the 36-card format events – and a $382,500 payday.
With 45 entries at $25k per head, the prizepool came to $1.125million and seven players would make the money, but Phil Ivey wouldn’t be among them.
The 44-year-old California-born poker legend of the game lost out in a set-over-set battle with Xia “Santi” Jiang, ousted in 11th spot and unable to add to his $408,000 opening day win.
Those who did make it to the cash spots and the final table included Triton Poker co-founder Paul Phua, coming into day 2 as the short stack, and Danny Tang, who had almost 300 antes in the ante-only event.
Tang, who won the $50k High Roller at the 2019 WSOP, exited first as his kings lost out to Chris Brewer’s middling ace, the US pro hitting the flop turn and river for a full house.
Next to depart was Phua, who couldn’t improve against Guoga’s bigger ace and then Jiang ran into Chris Brewer’s flopped trips – both men having cashed in the opening Short Deck event also.
With only 36 cards (the 2s through 5s removed for Short deck) the action as usual came thick and fast, and Robert Flink would have to settle for 3rd spot and $168,750.

That left Brewer heads-up Tony G, the irrepressible Lithuanian looking for his first tournament win since lifting the partypoker MILLIONS Europe €25k Short Deck title in 2019.
A tough battle ensued but eventually it was Guoga who emerged from the fray unscathed after Brewer called his pre-flop all-in...

"I'm the Champ!” Tony G proclaimed. “The bunny is the champ. It's no longer fun when the bunny's got the gun!” adding: “I am the best. At least I had the most fun. The fasting worked. Now let me go back-to-back and win two in a row."
He told PokerNews: “King-jack is one of the best hands in short deck...It's perfect to win tournaments. You should never play it in Texas Hold'em, but in short deck you should play it.”
Final table results:
1 | Antanas Guoga | $382,500 |
2 | Christopher Brewer | $247,500 |
3 | Robert Flink | $168,750 |
