Event 11 on the Triton Madrid schedule – wedged between the €100k NLH Main Event and the €100k Short Deck Main Event – saw 34 entries to the only four-card tournament of the 13 playing out in the Casino Gran Via.
In the money or out on the bubble?
With eight players returning for day 2, but only six walking off with a cash, the first order of the day was clear, and when Jeff Gross fell, followed by Triton co-founder and event 2 winner, Paul Phua, on the bubble, the remaining half dozen had secured €60,000.Among them, Patrik Antonius, who had ended Phua’s hopes, and Elton Tsang, who would be next to the rail courtesy of Dwan...
Tsang: A♣ K♦ K♥ Jâ™
Dwan: 10♠10♦ 7♦ 5♥
Flop: 7♥ 7♣ 6♣
Turn: 9♦
River: 8♣
Next to fall was Filip Lovric, his queens running into Ausmus’ kings, and then Antonius departed in 4th at the hands of Dwan, the legendary pair clashing for the umpteenth time. This time Dwan hit his flush draw on the turn and that was enough to KO Patrik, a €97,500 payday as compensation.
Norway’s Tom-Aksel Bedell may not be a household name, but he had already cashed once in this series and yesterday he added a 3rd place to that 7th spot finish in event 6.
Dwan looking for first-ever tournament win
Dwan was his conqueror and the American now faced countryman Jeremy Ausmus heads-up with one of the most incredible facts in poker on the table.
Tom Dwan, a legend since the poker boom began in the noughties, has never won an open poker tournament in his career – something that most people, your scribe included, didn’t know and couldn’t believe!
A quick check on Hendon Mob and sure enough, his only wins came in televised league-style events, meaning a victory over Ausmus would be a historic one for the Triton Poker ambassador.
Dwan had a clear chip lead but they were still relatively deepstacked as the day had been played at a frantic pace. However, there was no stopping Dwan and Ausmus soon found himself short, all-in and at risk on the flop...
Ausmus: 9♦ 5♠4♦ 3♥
Dwan: Q♦ Q♠J♦ 3♣
Flop: J♥ 8♦ 3♦
Turn: 8â™
River: K♥
♠♣ ♦ ♥
The turn and river blank gave Dwan his first title, and Ausmus another €199,000 for the kitty...
Final results
1 | Tom Dwan | €290,000 |
2 | Jeremy Ausmus | €199,000 |
3 | Tom-Aksel Bedell | €127,000 |
4 | Patrik Antonius | €97,500 |
5 | Filip Lovric | €76,500 |
6 | Elton Tsang | €60,000 |
“It was cool,” Dwan told Ali Nejad afterwards. “Honestly, it was fun to play because I had a big stack, and with this kind of structure you get to get away with a lot…That’s the fun kind of poker, and then every time I got called, I just got there. So that was fun.”
Next up is the Short Deck Main Event, and the payouts have been announced, a monster €1,800,000 to the winner...
