Jonathan Jaffe Wins PokerMasters $50,000 Finale for $756,000

The American topped the 42-entrants strong field in the event that was to decide the overall winner of the Poker Masters who would wear the Purple Jacket. And no less than four of those players were still in the mix at the final table—Stephen Chidwick, Brian Kim, Alex Foxen, and Chino Rheem.

Nick Petrangelo was the first to go, leaving the event in sixth place with a $105,000 prize. Now it was Jaffe up against the four contenders.

Rheem was next, coming out worse against Jaffe’s pocket aces in an all-in confrontation. Kim needed the win to stand a chance but Chidwick put paid to that in a preflop race.

Chidwick also dealt with Alex Foxen soon after to win the Purple Jacket race, leaving his focus squarely on winning a second Poker Masters event.

With less than 25% of the chips in play, Chidwick, holding A9o, raised Jaffe’s limp with A3o. Jaffe pondered for a few seconds before deciding that this was the hand to pull the trigger with. Chidwick called and the pair went to the flop with Jaffe only having a 25% chance of winning.

The flop missed both players, coming down Kd 7s Td. The turn was a brick 8c.

But then the card that Chidwick was hoping we wouldn’t see—one of only three left in the deck—came down to end his chances of a double win in the prestigious series: the 3c.

Jaffe breathed a sigh of relief and shook his opponent’s hand before celebrating. Chidwick can’t have been that upset, though, because he banked $504,000, more than 25% more than what he got for his win in the $25k event a few days before.
