It was the penultimate tournament of the 13-event Triton Madrid SHR Series, and Koon – one of Triton Poker’s ambassadors – was among 34 entries, producing a €5,100,000 prizepool of which only 6 players would partake.
The likes of Phil Ivey, Paul Phua, Tom Dwan and Mikita Badziakouski all failed to make the deep end, but there was a star-studded final table nevertheless.
Daniel Cates, Daniel Dvoress, Sam Greenwood, Ike Haxton, and Seth Davies joined Koon in the money after Malaysia's Lun Loon took the bubble-boy “accolade” and fell, unpaid, in 7th.
Lun fell to Dvoress’ aces, and Cates was soon to follow to the same hand, this time Ike Haxton wielding the rockets...

Cates: A♠10♦
Flop: J♥ 7♠6♦
Turn: 9♣
River: 6♥
Seth Davies was next to fall, running into Koon’s kings, but a 3rd cash of the series meant his Triton duck was well and truly broken in Madrid. It was then a typically action-packed hand that accounted for Canada’s Sam Greenwood, Dvoress also at risk but tripling up...
Greenwood: A♣ 1Q♦
Haxton: K♣ J♦
Dvoress: A♥ J♥
Flop: K♥ J♣ 7â™
Turn: 6♥
River: 9♦
A period of doubling up – and down – followed, but something had to give and eventually it was Haxton who finished in 3rd spot, despite flopping top pair – the river giving Dvoress a bigger pair.
Heads-up continued without a deal, or even talk of one, with Koon recovering from a 2:1 chip deficit to close out the event in style...

“I get my four-time badge!” was Koon’s initial response to his victory, explaining, “I was denied that twice and I was upset that Mikita [Badziakouski] had it. But I got that now.”
Now a father, Koon admitted that “baby run good” may have been a factor: “He’s been here eight months and we’ve won a bracelet and a Triton title. Maybe there’s something to it.”
