It's very entertaining when a regular high stakes poker player reveals his thoughts and analysis when faced with a huge bet on the river.
Jean-Robert Bellande was in that position on a recent episode of High Stakes Poker, betting $65,000 and getting check-raised to $265,000 by Eric Persson. The Maverick Gaming honcho's bet swelled the pot to $435,400 and JRB thought long and hard about whether or not to make the call.
To the delight of many, Bellande didn't keep his thoughts to himself. He analyzed and scrutinized Persson's move, talking out loud throughout the entire process.
His reasoning and comments were both accurate and comical, getting laughs from a few of his tablemates that included Jennifer Tilly, Andrew Robl, Daniel Negreanu, Stanley Choi, and Stanley Tang. Persson wasn't laughing - he was shaking in his boots while waiting for JRB to either call the $200K bet or fold.
The Action
The hand began with a double straddle and a raise by Robl to $5,000 with Kd-Qh. Bellande (Ah-Kc) made the call, as did Persson (Ah-9h) in the BB and Tilly (3s-3h) in first straddle position. The flop (5d-6c-Ac) hit the board, a miss for Robl and the Hollywood actress, but connecting with the holdings of JRB and Eric, the latter checking. A bet of $12K by Bellande was called by Persson, the pot now standing at $45,400.
The turn (10d) saw Persson check again, prompting Bellande to wager $30,000. A call increased the pot to $105,400.
The dealer turned over the 8d on the river. That's when Eric checked, JRB bet $65K, and Persson check-raised to $265K.
"I can tell you that Robl would not fold my hand," JRB said, alluding to what Andrew would do if faced with the same situation. "But I'm not rich enough to call you."
Will Bellande eventually make the call? Watch the video below and see.
