Chris Brewer has scooped the €357,180 top prize for winning the opening €25k Super High Roller event at PokerStars EPT Paris, a 15-hour slog against some of the best highstakes tournament players in the world.
There were 44 entries at the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile, which has already seen numbers having to be capped in the French Poker Series Main Event as players rush to enjoy PokerStars first visit to the French capital.
With more than €1million in prizemoney on the line, first order of the day for the nosebleed tournament players was to make the six paid spots, and one player in particular was looking to set a record of sorts.
Norway’s Kayhan Mokri Roshanfekr was attempting to secure his 6th final table in as many tournaments, with a runner-up spot worth €171,742 in the EPT Paris opener, the €10,200 Mystery Bounty High Roller Event.
Fate had other ideas, however, as Brewer put him to the test on the bubble...
Mokri: A♦ 9♣
Brewer: 8♠8♣
Board: J♦ 7♠5♣ 4♠10♦
That left the remaining six with €72,400 locked up, but Orpen “Orp the Turk” Kisacikoglu’s hopes of going any further were dashed by a combination of Petrangelo’s kings and a ridiculous flop...
Kisacikoglu: 9♠9♦
Petrangelo: K♥ Kâ™
Flop: K♣ K♦ 3♦
Turn: 4♥
River: 9♣
Ren Lin’s deep run was also over when he walked into kings, this time at the hands of Brewer, followed to the rail by Petrangelo who lost a race with sixes against Brazil’s Felipe Ketzer.
The podium spots still needed to be decided, and it was Canadian highstakes crusher Daniel Dvoress who would finish 3rd and pocket €160,400.
Heads-up saw Brewer with a commanding chip lead but Florianpolis pro Ketzer had fought back well earlier and continued to battle gamely.
However, it was to be those dreaded pocket kings that decided the title, with Ketzer’s slow-play trap backfiring...
Ketzer: K♠K♦
Brewer: 9♦ 2♦
Flop: 10♦ 8♣ 2♣
Turn: 9♣
Ketzer bet out on the turn, only to be surprised by Brewer’s all-in reply. His call with kings was met by the bad news, and the river was of no help...
River: 4♥
