Poker fans were treated to a rare sight this week when David “Viffer” Peat returned to our screens, the legendary highstakes cash game beast teasing his appearance with some self-deprecatory humour on Twitter...

“Viffer”, whose nickname came about after a drunken incident involving a pool cue and parts unmentionable on these family pages, had been MIA for a while, poker taking a back seat while family life took over.

Peat explained: “About 8 or 9 years ago I decided I was going to take a break from poker – got married and met a wonderful woman – had to get out of Vegas and moved to Boston.”

He said at the time of his retirement: “My poker career is over; I don’t find it interesting any more. It’s time to look for something new.”

The bug never really leaves a player though, and the recent Hustler Live highstakes games caught his eye.

“Didn’t play poker for quite a few years, then slowly started playing a little bit here and there...and then I saw this show on YouTube and I thought, “You know what? I want to play on this show!”

“I reached out to Ryan [Ryan Feldman, the show’s co-founder and producer] and he said, “Yeah, come on in!”
He may look a few years’ older, but some things haven’t changed with “Viffer” – his sense of humour still shining through, as in when he describes his passion for the game."

“Poker was my absolute...all my life I’d wake up and play poker, I’d sleep and play poker, I’d think about poker while having sex – it was horrible!”

The poker itself was a rather dull affair, no huge hands or clashes and Viffer’s often wild and unconventional style of play, but the chat was worth the buy-in alone, Viffer relating an incredible tale of banging on the doors to get into a rehab clinic.

He tweeted after the show: “Big thanks to @TheRyanFeldman and @HCLPokerShow for having me in show, playing with a shot clock and cool people really makes poker fun again. Might start playing more."

His poker needs a bit of work, it seems, Viffer confessing: “Gotta go practice up a bit, I was pretty lost in most of the hands I played, didn’t feel comfortable, that comes from not playing much. Maybe while @andystackspoker is away, I can take his place bluffing @GmanPoker he can’t dodge me forever!!!”
