Sam Trickett has called a temporary halt to his poker career, walking away from his ambassadorship role with partypoker. The Brit said he was taking some time away from the game to concentrate on his growing family.

Moving On

Trickett and his wife Meike Dockley became parents for the first time in October 2020. The arrival of Bodhi Blu looks to have given them the usual change of perspective, with Trickett being torn between leaving his poker career at its peak or feeling he isn’t putting his all into being a parent.

The 33-year-old from Nottingham, England, tweeted the announcement to his followers, but we still get the feeling we’ll see him back at the table soon enough.

Rags to Riches

When Sam Trickett first discovered poker in 2005 he was an apprentice plumber banking on £72 per week. Not long after, the Dusk Till Dawn poker club opened in Nottingham giving Trickett a perfect opportunity to hone his skills into what we see today.

"The week after I played again and made the final. I realised that I'd improved from the first time I played. The second time I played, it was starting to get more obvious what the right decisions were, and I figured out that everyone else wasn't that good. It spurred me on to play more."

Only 15 years later he has picked up a massive $21,782,558 worth of winnings from live tournaments alone with much more from cash games and personal sponsorship. Pretty much the dream career.

This total makes him the second most successful live tournament player from England, behind Stephen Chidwick, and 12th on the all-time list.

It wasn’t always poker at the forefront of Trickett’s mind too. In fact, football was his first love, but unfortunately a serious knee injury put paid to that. Only a few years later he would finish second in the $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop for more than $10 million, the result that would define his career.

It is worth noting that this huge cash actually counts for less than half of his total winnings, proving that he really does deserve his fearsome reputation.

We wish Sam Trickett and his family the best for the future whatever they choose to do, and hope one day to see Sam back at the felt where he belongs.

Sam Trickett’s Biggest Hits

2012 Big One for One Drop: There’s no doubt that this event cemented Sam Trickett’s place in English poker history. Collecting more than $10 million for finishing second to Antonio Esfandiari rocketed him to the top of the all-time winners list for the country.

He might now sit second to Stephen Chidwick, but this one cash alone would still leave him squarely in that place. It is only Chidwick’s rise to superstardom that has stopped Trickett from owning top spot for what would have been a very long time.

partypoker MILLIONS Sochi Super High Roller Series: Even almost a decade after joining the world of high stakes poker, Sam Trickett reminded us last year that he is still a force at the top of the game.

Playing at the partypoker LIVE festival in Sochi, Russia, Trickett steamrolled his way through a top-draw field in the $25,000 Super High Roller that included the likes of Phil Ivey and Adrian Mateos.

$171K Cash Game Pot at Dusk Till Dawn: The Nottingham card room was where it all started for Trickett, so where better to showcase one of his classic hands from 2018.

Paul Newy raises to £1,500 with pocket threes. Trickett calls with pocket sevens in the cutoff, Paul B calls with Ad Qh in the SB and Alex calls with As 4c in the BB.

The flop comes down 3d 6h 2c.

Everyone checks to Trickett who bets £3,000 into £6,200. Alex and Newey call.

The turn is the 7d.

The action checks to Trickett who bets £10,000 into £15,200. Alex folds and Newey only calls.

The river is the 6s.

Newy now leads out for £27,500 into a pot of £35,200. Trickett Hollywoods for a while before raising to £108,000. Now it’s Newey’s turn to go into the tank, for what seems like a long time. Eventually, however, he manages to find a good fold.

Hopefully in the future we can hear more tales from Trickett of his high stakes exploits in Macau where he claims to have one day lost a pot of £2.8 million!
