A new documentary featuring the life and career of poker legend Mike Matusow is in post production, aiming for a full release in early 2024.
This is going to be a full warts and all production with nothing left out. All of the drama associated with Matusow will be on display, including some of his famous “Matusow blow ups”.
Mike Matusow has been around the poker world for close to three decades now. He’s experienced every possible emotion in the game and traversed the full spectrum of the seven figure win to being busto.
There is no other like him. With four World Series of Poker bracelets to his name and more than $10 million in live tournament winnings, how can a character like this not be in the Poker Hall of Fame yet?
Frank Zarrillo of Big F Productions is hoping to put to rest any misconceptions that poker fans have about “the Mouth”.
“A lot of people have this misconception of him that he's bad, good, or unapproachable, or a jerk. That couldn't be further than the truth. I spent a lot of time with Mike at casinos, doctor appointments, family and friend outings, restaurants, you name it. He's a generous guy that always tells the truth and is upfront with you.”
Zarrillo was of the opinion that there couldn’t be a better choice for a poker documentary. He says Matusow never holds anything back and doesn’t care what people think about him. He speaks his mind regardless. But he also points out that his subject is a good guy who is loyal to a fault.
The film crew followed Matusow around the WSOP over the last few years, including the final year at the Rio and later into Bally’s.
Zarrillo said:
“It's not an easy gig, let me assure you, but I love the whole process. It takes time, effort, talent, and patience to make a feature film, especially at this level.
“Because when you direct a story, and it involves the biggest names in the poker industry, you have to be confident in yourself and your abilities that it's going to come out better than everyone's expectations.
“So many people will be judging and critiquing your work, so we have to ensure that it's going to be the best poker documentary ever made.”
We can also look forward to seeing some of poker’s other big characters making an appearance in the final cut. Matusow’s good friend Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, and Shaun Deeb can all be expected to give their opinion.
