Louise Brunson, the wife of the late, great, Doyle Brunson, has passed away at the age of 89 five months after losing her husband.
The sad news was posted by daughter Pamela Brunson on Facebook who explained that Louise had died in her sleep.
"I'm sure she is so excited to be in heaven with my dad. An invite-only funeral will take place on Monday.
"Please keep us in your prayers. It's been a crazy five months."
Louise was known to have had health issues in her later years and was cared for by Doyle up until his passing in May 2023. Doyle might have been playing poker right up until the end but his first priority was always his family.
The pair were married for 62 years after meeting in 1959 and had three children. Todd, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame like his dad, and his two sisters Pamela and Doyla.
Out of the Limelight
Very little was known about Louise in the wider poker community, but we did get to hear some of the trials and tribulations of being married to a professional gambler in 2018 when she gave an interview to PokerNews.
Only a couple of questions in and we immediately realise that the lifestyle of today’s top poker players wasn’t yet a thing in the 1960s.
We’ve heard plenty of these tales from Doyle himself but imagine your partner living the life of a Texas road gambler back in the day.
“It was terrible, just terrible. They would come after them with guns and everything else. And I couldn’t wait just to get a new car because in those times it was tough. It was a lot different back then.”
Readers also feel the sadness when Louise tells how Doyle was diagnosed with what was thought to be terminal cancer.
“He was given three months to live, and I had just gotten pregnant.”
The pair were also seriously tested when they lost Doyla at the age of 18 but came through it all stronger.
“We went through a lot in our lifetime. But what doesn’t kill you, keeps you together and closer. I knew that I loved him, and I knew that he loved me. And if we had a disagreement, it would just be minor. But I usually let him have his way.”
Our hearts go out to Louise Brunson's family and friends as they come to terms with this loss, and we offer our deepest condolences during this difficult time.
