A poker player at a Bad Beat Jackpot table at Grosvenor Casino in Coventry missed out on hitting the £250,000 jackpot - and winning £75,000 - when the bad beat occurred on the hand's second runout.

Before we delve into the details of this unlucky occurrence, perhaps a bit of background is in order.

The National Bad Beat Jackpot at Grosvenor Casinos is immensely popular as players at BBJ tables at any of the more than four dozen casinos in the UK will share the wealth when the jackpot is hit.

When triggered, the NBBJ is paid out in the following fashion:

  • 30% to the player with the Bad Beat Hand
  • 15% to the player with the Winning Hand
  • 5% to the players on the table where the NBBJ hit, excluding the winner and loser
  • 50% shared equally among active players at qualifying Grosvenor tables around the UK

It's a progressive jackpot, with jackpot totals reaching £310,000 and £380,000 in recent months. Also of note is that the qualifying hand decreases as the jackpot increases by £15,000, starting at quad Aces and going down to quad Kings, quad Queens, and so forth on a weekly basis.

The NBBJ reached £250,000 late last month, a total that would pay out £75,000 to the loser of the hand, £37,500 to the winner, £12,500 divided equally to players at the table where the jackpot hit, and £125,000 at NBBJ tables throughout the UK.

So imagine the unlucky player's reaction when he sees his quad Tens get beat by a straight flush on the turn, only to find that the jackpot isn't triggered on the second runout when players run it twice.
