Amazon has expanded its content offerings on its Prime Video streaming service by adding SportsGrid, a 24-hour gambling network. The move comes as Amazon has been acquiring the rights to stream sports events lately and has shown an interest in launching a standalone sports app.

SportsGrid provides live sports coverage, gambling insights, and analysis, and will be Prime Video's first fully dedicated gambling outlet. It will also be free to Prime subscribers to watch, promising many different shows and hundreds of interesting features. This move is in line with other competitors in the industry who have been working on combining sports viewership and gambling content.

Amazon's interest in sports is not new, as it acquired the rights to Thursday Night Football this past season in an 11-year deal that will cost over $1bn annually. Prime Video also aired 21 New York Yankees baseball games from the past season exclusively to Prime users, and it includes English Premier League matches.

In December 2022, Amazon revealed that it was considering launching a standalone sports app, which would allow it to earn money from sports broadcasts and related operations and also add content plans to subscription packages. Although Amazon is not directly involved in sports betting, it is aiming to improve its market position by adding sports betting-themed content, as that is what's hot on the market.

Several major sportsbooks already offer live streaming services, while platforms such as Fubo have previously accepted bets right from their streaming platform.

Amazon's move to add SportsGrid is in line with other competitors in the industry. Many companies are working on combining sports viewership and betting, as 36 states have already legalised sports betting, and over $80bn was bet on sports in 2022.

Amazon's addition of SportsGrid to its content offerings on Prime Video is another step towards the company's interest in sports. With an increasing number of states legalising sports betting and the industry's potential for growth, it's no surprise that companies are combining sports viewership and betting.
