Rules of Roulette You Must Know

The Roulette wheel is one of the oldest and most popular casino games in existence. It has been around for over 200 years, and its popularity shows no sign of waning. Of all casino table games, it's probably the easiest to understand and requires minimal effort on the player's part; simply place your bet and wait until the wheel stops spinning.

But despite its simplicity, there are different betting options and several house rules that can significantly influence your chances of winning. It's safe to say the average novice has a rather vague understanding of how to play roulette and tends to rely more on luck than common sense. That's why we decided to put together this complete guide on playing roulette.

We'll show you how to beat the game, meaning at the end of this article, you should know more than most gambling enthusiasts about roulette's rules and strategies, as well as some helpful beginner tips that will guarantee your first few games are successful ones.

The Layout - Betting Options

A lot is going on inside the roulette wheel, and sometimes it can seem a little overwhelming to first-timers. But let's start with the betting options, which are widely considered the best tool for determining your chances of winning. When it comes to placing bets, there are two types: inside and outside bets.

Inside bets, as you might expect, involve placing wagers on one or more numbers or groups of numbers. The numbers correspond with the numbers on the wheel, and they can be found in either red or black, odd or even and high (1-18) and low (19-36).

Depending on where you are playing, you can also place a bet on 1-12 or 13-24/26-36. Outside bets involve betting that a certain number will show when the ball falls or that a group of numbers will be the last to come up. For this reason, they are known as "LAST" bets.

Inside and outside bets offer very different chances of winning and betting strategies despite what you might think. We'll start with outside bets:

Outside Bets

Straight Up (1-18/19-36) - Bet that a specific number will be chosen. This is by far the most straightforward bet in roulette, and it wins automatically if your number comes up. It pays 35:1, meaning you'll receive 35 times your wager for a winning bet of one unit. The house edge for this bet is 2.70%, meaning for every $100 wagered, the casino will pay out an average of $2.70 (factoring in winning and losing bets).

Split (1-18/19-36) - Like straight up, except it's one half of your original wager per number if your bet loses.

Street (1-18) - Bet that a number from 1 to 18 will only come upon the right half of the wheel. This bet pays 17:1 and has a 5.26% house edge.

Corner (1-18) - Bet that two numbers at most diagonal from each other will come up. This bet pays 8:1 and has a 5.26% house edge.

Trio (1-18) - Bet that three numbers will come up in sequence. This bet pays 11:1 and has a 12.5% house edge.

Line (19-36) - Bet that any number between 19 and 36 will only come upon the right half of the wheel. This bet pays 17:1 and has a 5.26% house edge.

Six Line (19-36) - Bet that any number between 19 and 36 will come up in two or more consecutive rows. This bet pays 11:1 and has a 12.5% house edge.

Column (1-12) - Bet that any number between 1 and 12 will only come up on the left half of the wheel. This bet pays 11:1 and has a 12.5% house edge.

Dozen (1-3,13-24/4-6,25-36) - Bet that any number between 1 and 12 will come up on the left half of the wheel only. This bet pays 11:1 and has a 12.5% house edge.

Red/Black - Bet that all numbers in play are either red or black, including zero. If you win, you receive even money (1-1). This is one of the most popular bets in roulette, and it has a 5.26% house edge.

Even/Odd - Bet that all numbers in play are either even or odd, including zero. If you win, you receive even money (1-1). This is another very popular bet because it offers better odds than red/black, and it has a 5.26% house edge.

High/Low - Bet that all numbers in play are either high (1-18) or low (19-36). If you win, you receive even money (1-1). This is another bet with better odds than red/black, but it's not really used that often because most players expect numbers to be evenly distributed. It has a 5.26% house edge.

Inside Bets

Straight Up (1-18/19-36) - Bet that a specific number will be chosen. This is another simple bet in roulette, and it wins automatically if your number comes up. It pays 17:1, meaning you'll receive 17 times your wager for a winning bet of one unit. The house edge for this bet is 5.26%.

Split (1-18/19-36) - Like straight up, except it's one half of your original wager per number if your bet loses. This is the only losing roulette bet that pays out at more than even money because it costs you less to place the bet.

If you make two bets of $5 on split numbers and one of them hits, then you have a winning bet of $10. In doing so, you lose 10 * .526 = 5.26% of your money. This is the most popular non-strategy roulette bet in America - mainly because it's easy to make and offers decent odds if one number happens to hit.
